Y Rhinogau (pronounced rin_og_eye) are opposite the cabins. Set 800 feet up on a hillside, the cabins face onto the spectacular Rhinogau , the two most prominent peaks being Rhinog Fach and Rhinog Fawr (shown above). One of the wildest areas in Wales, Y Rhinogau occupy a vast area of land between the vale of Festioniog and the Mawdach estuary, an area now recognised as the 'Rhinog National Nature Reserve'
The ridge runs North to South and is more than 15km in length. The Rhinogs themselves, Rhinog Fawr (720m) and Rhinog Fach (712m), are in the middle. From Trawsfynydd or other starting points to the North you can start with an ascent of Moel Ysgyfarnogod (623m) and then cross an area of complex, rocky terrain. The rocks are highly faulted and there are several small llyns in gaps amongst them, including the lovely Llyn Du below Rhinog Fawr.
To the South are two higher though perhaps less interesting summits, Y Llethr (756m) and Diffws (750m). Beyond them the ridge continues and it would even be possible to start or finish a complete traverse of the ridge on the coast at Barmouth
Y Rhinogau are Wales' secret hills and untroubled by the mass of visitors that swarm all over Snowdon. It is genuinely possible to enjoy a magnificent sense of isolation on your walks here - its possible you will not meet any other walkers.
